BUILDING THE NEXT

MEDIA ECONOMY

AI is changing how information is created, discovered, and valued.

As content becomes infinite, value is shifting to what remains scarce: trust, community, participation, and human connection.

This shift creates the opportunity for a new media economy: one where premium content builds trust, audiences become communities, and business models expand beyond monetizing attention to monetizing the value they create.

The Thesis

The future of media will be defined by the value it creates.

Premium editorial will become more valuable.
Original reporting, distinctive voices, deep expertise, storytelling, and human judgment will drive growth.

Trust will become a business asset.
Editorial authority creates the foundation for deeper relationships with the people media companies serve.

Audiences will become communities.
Those relationships become more participatory, creating opportunities for connection, contribution, and value exchange.

Media will become more useful.
Media will increasingly help people not only understand the world, but navigate it: discover what matters, access expertise, connect with others, and make better decisions.

The economics will follow the value.
Companies that create more value for the people they serve will unlock new products, experiences, revenue models, and businesses.

The Shift

What creates value in media is changing.

THE INFORMATION ERA

Information was scarce.

Media companies had access to information, the means of production, and control over distribution.

Value was created by producing and distributing information.

THE DIGITAL ERA

Access and distribution changed.

The internet dramatically expanded what people could access, who could publish, and how information was consumed.

As choices multiplied, attention became scarce.

Search, social, and digital platforms built businesses around helping people discover information — and monetizing their attention.

Value shifted toward attention.

THE AI ERA

Content is now infinite.

AI can generate, synthesize, personalize, and distribute information at unprecedented scale.

But more content doesn't necessarily make it easier to know what matters.

Instead, it increases the value of things technology can't easily manufacture:

Trust.
Relevance.
Judgment.
Human connection.

Value is shifting again.

The Next Media Economy

Changing the business model.

During the digital era, the media business model was built around monetizing attention: create content, attract an audience, and sell access to that audience through advertising or charge for access through subscriptions.

Those models aren't going away. But they are no longer the limit of what a media business can be.

The next media economy will monetize the value media creates, not just the attention it captures.

A media company that deeply understands the people it serves can build businesses around their needs: membership, events, research, intelligence, data, education, services, commerce, licensing, technology, tools, marketplaces, partnerships, and products we haven't imagined yet.

The goal isn't diversification for diversification's sake. Every new business should create meaningful value for the people it serves.

That changes the fundamental growth question from:

How do we get more people to consume our content?

to:

What else can we help people do?

What We Build Next

If the future of media is defined by the value it creates, where do we evolve?

AI and the changing value equation are creating new possibilities for how media is built, experienced, and monetized. Here are some of the areas I am particularly interested in:

THE COMMUNITY ECONOMY
How do media organizations create deeper value exchange with the communities they serve?

NEXT-GENERATION MEDIA COMPANIES
How do creator and personality driven media companies turn trust, expertise, and audience relationships into enterprises?

NEW DISTRIBUTION & DISCOVERY MODELS
How do we help people find what matters when content becomes infinite?

DECISION INTELLIGENCE
How can media, community, data, expertise, and AI help people make better decisions?

HUMANITY + AI
What becomes more valuable precisely because it is human?

One central idea:
The future of media will be built around creating more value for the people it serves.

About Me

I’m Ann Marinovich

I’ve spent my career building media businesses at moments of change.

I've worked across media at moments when technology, consumer behavior, and business models were changing the rules.

Across leadership roles at Forbes, TIME, The Information, Adweek, and emerging technology companies, I've led across editorial, sales, revenue, product, partnerships, subscriptions, events, licensing, audience development, and operations.

I've built new businesses, scaled revenue models, transformed existing ones, led global teams, and operated across the full media P&L.

The common thread has been building what's next.

Today, I'm focused on the next evolution of media: where value is moving, what audiences will need, and what new products, and business models will create opportunities.

THE NEXT MEDIA ECONOMY ISN'T PREDETERMINED.

We get to build it.
